Shifting from Desperation to Inspiration

15th March 2017 by Colin Murphy Leave a Comment

It hits you, in one very heavy moment, that your big wedding day is only two months away. What have you been doing for the last few weeks? You’ve been cramming pizza into your mouth, and drinking gin and tonics!

Your exam is tomorrow morning, and you haven’t opened a book.

You’ve procrastinated in your search for Eddie Vedder tickets, and now you’re sweating.

You’ve an important early morning interview, and you’re alarm doesn’t go off.

We’ve all been to that terrible place called desperation, and it’s one hell of a ride!

Desperation is fast, uncomfortable, and so intense, that we can only ever stay in it for a short period of time. You hit your exercise regime at one hundred miles an hour for ten days, and then pass out from the effort and exhaustion. You stay up all night studying, before falling asleep in the exam. You offer a stranger an ungodly amount of money for those prized concert tickets.

To think that you can somehow succeed at achieving things this way is ludicrous! You simply won’t be able to stick with the intensity.

Desperation certainly has a part to play in small goals, but the big goals should be left to inspiration. Long term desperation exists, but comes from fear, and therefore may not be very healthy for most people to sustain.

For long term goals, switch over to inspiration.

To be mentally stimulated to do or feel something, is to be inspired. This is exciting, powerful, and raises you up to a place you haven’t been before, but are driven to get to. We are all inspired by places, thoughts and people. You won’t have to search for long to find the spark that ignites the kindling of your desire into a roaring furnace.

Desperation is like a bad cup of coffee…it will get you to where you want to go, but you’ll feel drained after it. Inspiration has staying power, which leads to consistent action, and therefore success in getting what you’ve set yourself up to achieve.

In all your future wants, strive to be calmly inspired, rather than frenzied and desperate. Nobody wants to have that crazy look in their eye.
