Who doesn’t enjoy eating an ice cream on a gorgeous summer’s day? Ice creams are delicious, sweet, cold, and come in lots of different shapes and sizes!
But what about those of us who are watching what we eat, and trying to avoid putting on weight over the holiday months?
Everyone deserves a treat every now and then, but how do we decide which ice cream is OK, and which one is a downright caloric explosion!
I have studied (not eaten…yet!) five of the most popular summer ice creams, and have ranked them based on their calories, fat, sugar, and protein content.
Yes, we could delve much deeper and comb through the ingredients list of each one, but this is a quick reference to keep in mind next time you dip your hand into that big supermarket freezer!
I have no scientific data to suggest that these five ice creams are actually the most popular ice creams during summer, so please feel free to disagree with me and share your favourite!
Doing battle for Summer’s must-grab ice cream are HB’s big dogs…Cornetto, Magnum, Brunch, Iceberger and Feast.
Before you continue reading, take a moment to rank them yourself, then see how you do!
I have ranked them worst to best, so lets dive in!
1. Feast
It ain’t called a feast for nothing! I was shocked and horrified to find out that my favourite ice cream of the five was also pretty much the worst for you!
I used to drool over the blue and yellow wrapping every time I passed a supermarket ice cream freezer…it was the big lump of chocolate in the middle that drove me wild!
Here are the stats: 18g fat, 24g (21g) carbs (sugars), 2.8g protein, and 271 calories.
With that many calories in each ice cream, it may be best to leave this one for your birthday! It also has the highest fat content of the five.
I unfortunately may have to re-think my relationship with this ice cream from here on in.
2. Magnum Classic
I was sure that Magnum would be the highest in everything! It looks big, is chock full of ice cream, and has an all round huge reputation! The mix of crisp smooth chocolate, and rich vanilla ice cream seduces you to rip it open.
Here are the stats: 14g fat, 21g (20g) carbs (sugars), 2.6g protein, and 222 calories.
This one’s filled with twenty grams of sugar, and packs a solid two hundred plus calories, so only grab it if you’re just after an endurance session, or you’re starving!
3. Cornetto
This ice cream seems to be as old as time! I still remember the song, “Just One Cornetto” that was blasted out on every television in Europe in the eighties!
This one surprised me a little as it doesn’t seem to have a lot of ice cream…half of it looks like it’s just cone, so I definitely expected this to rank a little higher.
Here are the stats: 11g fat, 23g (15g) carbs (sugars), 2.1g protein, and 206 calories.
A Cornetto just breaks the 200 calorie mark, so it can certainly dent your good eating habits.
4. Brunch
This colourful (almost furry) ice cream did very well! It certainly has to be one of the most unique looking ice creams around. The crunchy mix of the coating, with the smoothness of the ice cream, is a great combination.
Here are the stats: 12g fat, 18g (13g) carbs (sugars), 2.4g protein, and 189 calories.
This had the lowest sugar content, which made it a strong candidate for the top position. However, it’s fat content was a lot more, and therefore calories were higher too (but only just!).
5. Iceberger
This stickless ice cream sandwich may be a little messy to eat, but it ranks numero uno on our list!
Here are the stats: 7.4g fat, 27g (17g) carbs (sugars), 3.1g protein, and 187 calories.
This one ranked lowest on both fat and calories, but highest on carbs. Overall, however, it had the most protein which made it our summer choice.
Rip open that packaging, let the brown wafer stick to your fingers, and munch away mad!!
The summer comes round once a year so go out there and enjoy it. Know that you’ll be eating a little more ice cream, but be mindful of what’s going into your body.
Maybe you simply must eat a Magnum or Feast every time you’re strolling in the sun. That’s OK as long as you adjust what you eat afterwards, so you’re not consistently taking in excess calories.
Enjoy this time of year with the treats that come with it! If you’re training well most days, then a few ice creams don’t have to scare you or throw you off track.
Do you agree with my choices? Would you like to add a certain ice cream to the conversation? Leave a comment and let me know!

Colin, I am delighted to see that my favourite icecream, the Iceberger comes out on top. I might just have to use this as a cheeky excuse to treat myself more often to one of them. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Suzanne, I was delighted too…it’s so satisfying! But I did mourn a little about my beloved Feast!!
